A nursing assistant takes care of a patient's basic needs, such as dressing, personal hygiene, eating, and exercise. Nursing assistants may work from home, in assisted living facilities or in local hospitals. In medical tasks, nursing assistants assist medical staff in venipuncture, monitoring vitals with medical equipment, reporting patient behavior and health, and ensuring the patient feels comfortable and well cared for. Becoming a nursing assistant requires many factors, and obtaining a CNA certification is one of the most important.
The CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) is a nationally recognized nursing qualification for nurses that includes a knowledge exam (a written portion) and a clinical skills test. The CNA exam demonstrates a candidate's knowledge and proficiency as a nursing assistant.
In the United States, each state has its own CNA exam. Depending on the applicant's residency status, the period is managed by different providers. There are third-party exam certification providers, including National NNAAP of Pearson Vue, Prometric's CNA Exam (Nurse Aide exam) and HDMaster (D&S Diversified Technologies)
The CNA is valid for 24 months and can be renewed in some states if that nursing assistant works at least eight hours. The nursing assistant must complete a renewal form (according to that state's form) and send it along with the renewal fee to the state board.
