Girls ages 16-19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of sexual assault (US Department of Justice) and 1 in 3 girls, 1 in 4 boys, and 1 in 2 trans & gender nonconforming folx will be sexually abused before the age of 18 (CDC). While teens are the most at risk for sexual assault, PAVE's Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Campaign was created to help prevent these crimes with education and promote healing during the last week of Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month in February.
The International nonprofit, Promoting Awareness I Victim Empowerment (PAVE), has joined together along with other leading organizations and direct service organizations who work in the field. PAVE works across the country to prevent sexual assault and help heal survivors has joined forces with grassroots victim rights organizations all across the country.
One of PAVE's campaign events, "Self-Care Beyond the Buzzword," will be on Friday (2/26) at 12 pm Pacific / 3 pm Eastern. PAVE Ambassador, Delaney Henderson, will be going on Instagram Live with PAVE's Outreach Director, Rachel Mackinnon to discuss self-care, boundaries, and healing from trauma. Delaney has been featured on CBS, Huffington Post, New York Times, MTV, Sundance International Film Festival, People Magazine, Teen Vogue Magazine, Buzzfeed, Cosmopolitan, and the Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy. Delaney's story made headlines when she was sexually assaulted by two boys with whom she went to high school with. After repeated attacks in school and on social media, Delaney decided to share her experience with the world as she came forward with her story at 16 years old.
Delaney Henderson said, "As a teen survivor, activist, and advocate, I understand what it feels like to overcome adversity, bullying, and thoughts of suicide to heal and thrive after trauma. I wish I had the education and awareness that PAVE is providing with their Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Campaign when I was assaulted in high school."
This week is dedicated to promoting and supporting the voices of teen advocates through engaging toolkits, live social media events and campaigns, and calls to action. This initiative also includes interactive videos and discussion points for parents to help talk to their teens about consent, healthy relationships, and sex.
