Making your house feel like home starts with decorating the living room.

From the type of sofa used to the way you arrange the rest of the furniture, small details make all the difference. If you are a first-time homeowner, or you feel you do not have a knack for interior design, it could be a daunting task. Here are some tried and true tips of what not to do when you are decorating your living room. By following some of these tips, your home will look straight out of a designer magazine.

Choosing The Wrong Sofa

Your sofa plays a major role in the flow of your living room. Before you start decorating your living room space, start with the sofa. Your sofa will lay the foundation for the rest of your living room. If you are on the hunt for a new sofa, make sure that you purchase one that is just the right size for the amount of space you are working with. Avoid getting a sofa that is too small or too large for the space you are working with. You should also pay close attention to the sofa seat height. Draw a furniture floorplan if you have to.

Picking A Disproportionate Coffee Table

When you are searching for that perfect coffee table, there are a few things you want to keep in mind. What is your lifestyle like? Do you have small children or pets? Maybe a coffee table with sharp, pointy edges is not the best option. Do you need lots of room for storage or are you looking for something sleek like mirrored coffee tables? Base your purchasing decisions on height, length and clearance space to ensure that your coffee table fits perfectly into your living room.

Purchasing A Rug That Is Too Small

That kills the mood of your living room all day long. Getting a rug that is too small is a rookie mistake. You may be thinking that investing in a larger rug is a waste of money, but quite the contrary. Putting a rug in your living room that is too small will give the illusion that you are working with a much smaller space. As a good rule of thumb, make sure that you are getting a rug that is 8-by-10-foot (if not a 9-by-12-foot) rug. Stay away from rugs that are under 6-by-9-feet. The only exception to this rule is if you have an exceptionally small living room.

Hanging Art Incorrectly

The common rule is to hang your art at least eye level, but sometimes this rule can cause more harm than good. Sometimes it is best to hang your art wherever it makes sense. If you are a tall person, your eye level is going to be different. Whether or not you have low ceilings also play a role, because if you are a tall person and you have low ceilings this could cause conflicts. As a new rule of thumb, your art should be in the third quadrant if you were to divide your wall into four sections.
