If you have a small room in your home it can be frustrating, especially if you have a lot of items and not enough space for them. A small room isn’t all bad though, there are some benefits such as it takes less time to get it clean and tidy, and if you are decorating it won’t take you as long in comparison to a bigger room.

It can be a struggle trying to organise everything within the room to make sure it all fits accordingly without being overwhelming. You can make a small room appear bigger, and in this post, we are going to look at some tips and tricks on how you can do this.

MAKE USE OF MIRRORS

A quick and easy way to make a room look bigger is to add mirrors. Adding mirrors to a room tricks the eye into thinking it is big and spacious. You can add a large framed mirror to a wall or place an oversized mirror up against the wall which will help reflect light around the room. This will also make it feel as though it’s much more spacious. A mirrored sideboard is a great alternative. If you place a mirror directly in front of a window, it will help reflect the natural daylight into the room.

LET IN LIGHT

If a room is well-lit, it already feels instantly bigger. There are different ways you can let light into a room. You can let natural light in by getting rid of heavy, dark curtains. If you have blinds, open these as far as they will go. Artificial light is another way to make a room brighter, especially during the winter months when it’s dark and drab outside. Add more lamps around the room and at different heights to ensure that even the corners of the room get some light in them.

USE LIGHT, NEUTRAL COLOURS

Another way to trick the eye into thinking a room is bigger is by using neutral tones. Try to use different textures to avoid the room looking flat. Although white walls will make a room seem bigger, they can be boring for some people, so instead choose colours like beige, sage, light grey, or soft yellow.

USE ALL AVAILABLE SPACE

Having a small room means you need to utilise every bit of space as much as you can. Try to choose furniture that has multiple purposes, like an ottoman can be used to store items away, and can be used as additional seating if needed. Even a windowsill can be used as storage as you can place books or vases if you don’t have room for a table. Floating shelves are another great way to make use of space.

CLEAR AWAY CLUTTER

An obvious but often overlooked trick is to clear away any clutter. If you have items lying around that you don’t need or use often, put them away or get rid of them. There’s no point keeping things out on display if they don’t serve a purpose.

Hopefully, these five tips will help make your small room look bigger, and remember to make the most of the space you have.
