We continue to innovate to create the future of protection," concluded Wilson.

Revenue growth

Insurers earn revenue three ways. The core insurance business itself, often called underwriting and represented in the income statement as premiums earned, is one way. Investment income from investing the “float” (premiums collected upfront not yet paid out as claims) in assets such as fixed-income assets and equities is the second way. Fees from various sources such as policy administration, annuities or other value-added services are the third. Over the last five years, Allstate grew its revenue at a decent 8% compounded annual growth rate. Its growth slightly outpaced that of the average insurance company, showing its offerings resonate with customers.

Allstate quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within financials, a half-decade historical view may miss recent interest rate changes and market returns. Allstate’s recent performance shows its demand has slowed as its annualized revenue growth of 6% over the last two years was below its five-year trend. Decelerating revenue growth in the sector warrants caution, as it could signal changing consumer tastes aided by low switching costs. This quarter, Allstate’s revenue grew by 2.8% year on year to $17.35 billion, falling short of Wall Street’s consensus estimates.

Net premiums earned made up 91.3% of the company’s total revenue during the last five years, meaning Allstate depends heavily on its underwriting activities because non-insurance operations contribute little.

Net premiums earned command greater market attention due to their reliability and consistency, whereas investment and fee income are often seen as more volatile revenue streams that fluctuate with market conditions.

Book value per share (BVPS)

Insurers are balance sheet businesses, collecting premiums upfront and paying out claims over time. Premiums collected but not yet paid out, often referred to as the float, are invested and create an asset base supported by a liability structure. Book value per share, or BVPS, captures this dynamic by measuring these assets (investment portfolio, cash and reinsurance recoverables) less liabilities (claim reserves, debt and future policy benefits). BVPS is essentially the residual value for shareholders.

BVPS is therefore important to track for insurers and sheds light on business quality. While other, more commonly known per-share metrics like earnings per share, or EPS, can sometimes be lumpy due to reserve releases or one-time items and can be managed or skewed while still following accounting rules, BVPS reflects long-term capital growth and is harder to manipulate.

Allstate’s BVPS grew at a mediocre 6.9% annual rate over the last five years. However, BVPS growth has accelerated recently to 29.9% annually over the last two years, with book value rising from $71.23 to $120.23 per share.

Over the next 12 months, consensus estimates call for Allstate’s BVPS to grow by 20.8% to $128.03, a strong growth rate.

Key takeaways from Allstate’s Q3 results

Allstate’s Q3 results were mixed, with clear positives in EPS, which beat analysts’ consensus estimates, and net premiums earned, which topped Wall Street’s consensus by a wide margin. But book value per share missed expectations, and revenue came in slightly below Wall Street’s consensus estimates. Shares remained flat at $267.50 immediately after the results.

Is Allstate an attractive investment at its current price? The latest quarter is only one part of assessing longer-term business quality. Quality, combined with valuation, can help determine if the stock is a buy. Read the full research report here (it’s free).
