What happened?

A number of stocks jumped in the afternoon session after crude oil prices plunged more than 6% on hopes of Middle East diplomatic progress, lowering fuel and transportation cost projections across commercial supply chains.

In market coverage carried by CNBC, the industrial sector advanced almost 2% during morning trade as capital rotated toward cyclical groups. Transport operators paced the rally, with United Airlines climbing 6.5% and Southwest Airlines advancing 4.2%, as reported by the Associated Press.

Crude prices retreated as Brent fell 6.7% to $105.87 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate dropped to roughly $97 after Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated the administration prefers a peaceful resolution with Iran, CNBC reported. Cyclical momentum was reinforced by the Institute for Supply Management, which reported its factory activity gauge rose to 55.5 in October from 54.5 in September, exceeding the 54.5 consensus from economists surveyed by Reuters.

Fuel and freight represent primary variable costs across commercial aviation and capital goods logistics. Although the survey's prices paid gauge registered an elevated 75.2, pointing to persistent manufacturing cost pressure, the sudden pullback in benchmark crude provides immediate operating expense relief.

When energy overhead eases while factory production accelerates, industrial operators capture operating leverage from simultaneous cost savings and durable order volume. That dynamic accelerates capital rotation out of defensives and into cyclical networks whose margins widen immediately as transport expenses decline.

The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.

Zooming in on WillScot Mobile Mini (WSC)

WillScot Mobile Mini’s shares are very volatile and have had 28 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 6 days ago when the stock gained 7.1% on the news that The Federal Reserve opened its two-day meeting with the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.995%, and futures priced roughly a 90% chance that rates stay in the current 3.75%–4% range, as reported by CNBC. September durable-goods orders rose 1.8%, a touch above the 1.7% gain economists polled by Dow Jones had expected. The decision comes later in the week, and Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference is where investors will listen for any sign of another hike before year-end. In addition to policy anticipations, resilient corporate updates reinforced market optimism, highlighted by United Parcel Service lifting its full-year guidance following better-than-expected profit results. Together, anticipation surrounding interest rate stability and robust corporate performance fueled widespread optimism across Wall Street.

WillScot Mobile Mini is up 1.3% since the beginning of the year, but at $19.72 per share, it is still trading 32.2% below its 52-week high of $29.07 from June 2026. Despite the year-to-date gain, investors who bought $1,000 worth of WillScot Mobile Mini’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $578.98.
