What is the market telling us
Encompass Health’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 7 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.
The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock gained 13.2% on the news that the company reported second-quarter earnings that surpassed analyst expectations for both revenue and profit.
The healthcare provider announced revenue of $1.6 billion for the quarter, an increase of 9.6% from the same period last year and 1.8% above estimates. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) came in at $1.55, which was 4.7% higher than the consensus forecast of $1.48. The strong performance in both key financial metrics, alongside a raised full-year profit outlook, indicated healthy growth for the company, driving positive investor sentiment.
Encompass Health is up 20.9% since the beginning of the year, and at $128.63 per share, it has set a new 52-week high. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Encompass Health’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $2,024.
