What happened?

Shares of credit reporting giant Equifax (NYSE: EFX) fell 2.7% in the afternoon session after RBC Capital analyst Ashish Sabadra downgraded the stock from Outperform to Sector Perform and set a price target of $189. According to StreetInsider, Sabadra cut Equifax to Sector Perform from Outperform and raised the target to $189 from $177.

The downgrade is about valuation after the rally off the lows, which he said has left the risk and reward more balanced. He also flagged three operating issues: persistent weakness in the mortgage market as rates stay higher, the chance that consumer lending softens, and regulatory risk if mortgage credit reports move from a tri-merge to a bi-merge. Equifax’s own outlook implies U.S. mortgage credit inquiries down more than 20% in the fourth quarter of 2026 and down by a high-single-digit rate in fiscal 2027, with most of that pressure in the first eight months of the year.

RBC models a mid-teens decline in the first half of 2027. Mortgage revenue excluding the FICO royalty carries high incremental margins, so fewer inquiries weigh on profit. A bi-merge shift could cost about $80 million of revenue a year. RBC’s fiscal 2027 earnings estimate of $9.00 is below the roughly $9.66 consensus, and the $189 target is 21 times that estimate.

After the initial drop, the shares shed some of the losses and rose to $178.03, down 2.4% from the previous close.

What is the market telling us

Equifax’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 14 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 4 days ago when the stock gained 6.3% on the news that Argus analyst John Eade upgraded the stock from Hold to Buy and set a $200 price target. According to TipRanks, Eade said Equifax has moved past its data-breach period onto a modest growth path, and that growth is starting to pick up as a new consumer credit-scoring model gains share. He also pointed to a recent double-digit dividend increase as a sign management is more confident in the cash-flow outlook. Argus said the shares trade at 17 times its 2027 earnings estimate, the low end of a historical range of 17 to 33 times. The upgrade follows a third quarter in which adjusted earnings of $2.26 a share beat the $2.20 consensus and revenue rose 9.6% to $1.69 billion, though mortgage-volume weakness and a fourth-quarter outlook below Street expectations remain the main pushback.

Equifax is down 16.8% since the beginning of the year, and at $178.03 per share, it is trading 22.3% below its 52-week high of $229.02 from October 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Equifax’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at only $657.01.
