AUBURN, N.Y. - Sept. 30, 2026 - PRLog -- As fall settles into Central New York, Sholar Automotive is sharing a series of practical vehicle maintenance tips with drivers throughout Auburn and Cayuga County.
The shop's Fall Maintenance Series began earlier this fall and covers different areas of vehicle maintenance each week. The goal is simple: help local drivers recognize warning signs, stay ahead of routine maintenance and address smaller problems before they turn into breakdowns or expensive repairs.
"Most vehicle problems don't start as major repairs," said Steve Sholar, owner of Sholar Automotive. "There are usually warning signs. We want to give people some useful information so they know what to watch for and what they should have checked."
The weekly series covers eight areas that are important as drivers move from fall into winter:
Week 1: Brakes
Brake repair including pads and rotors, sticking caliper pins, brake fluid, leaks, hoses and brake lines.
Week 2: Belts & Hoses
Serpentine belts, coolant hoses, cracks, leaks and other components that fail with little warning.
Week 3: Battery & Charging System
Battery condition, battery terminals, alternator performance, charging system problems are signs of electrical trouble.
Week 4: Tires & Alignment
Tire pressure, tread depth, uneven wear and alignment problems that can affect handling and tire life.
Week 5: Cooling System
Coolant levels, hoses, leaks and other cooling system problems that can lead to overheating.
Week 6: Heating & Defrost
Heating and defrost systems that help keep drivers comfortable and, more importantly, maintain visibility during cold and wet weather.
Week 7: Fluids & Final Winter Check
Important vehicle fluids and a practical list of items drivers may want checked before winter weather arrives.
Week 8: New York State Inspections
What drivers need to bring when a vehicle is due for a New York State inspection, what inspectors check and some of the problems that can result in an immediate inspection failure.
For drivers in Auburn and throughout Cayuga County, seasonal maintenance can be particularly important as temperatures drop and winter driving conditions approach. Problems appearing minor during warmer weather can become more noticeable when a vehicle is exposed to cold temperatures, snow and road salt.
These tips are intended to serve as simple reminders that regular maintenance can help identify problems before they leave someone sitting on the side of the road.
