Faircare Launches Consumer App To Detect Medical Billing Errors And Reduce Medical Debt

-- Medical bills have become a growing source of financial stress for Americans, with studies showing that billing errors are far more common than many patients realize. A new consumer-focused app called Faircare aims to address that problem by helping users scan medical bills for discrepancies and understand charges in plain language.

According to a 2023 analysis published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, an estimated 40–80% of U.S. medical bills contain some form of error, ranging from duplicate charges to incorrect procedure codes and services that were never provided. These mistakes can lead patients to overpay by hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars.

Faircare was developed to help non–healthcare professionals identify these issues without needing specialized billing knowledge. The app allows users to upload medical bills and insurance explanations of benefits (EOBs), then analyzes the documents to flag potential errors and confusing charges.

“Most people don’t pay medical bills because they fully understand them,” said a Faircare spokesperson. “They pay because they’re afraid not to. Faircare was created to give consumers clarity and confidence before they hand over their money.”

Unlike traditional medical billing advocates, which often require lengthy phone calls or contingency-based fees, Faircare focuses on accessibility and speed. The app explains line items in plain English, highlights discrepancies, and provides guidance on next steps for disputing questionable charges with providers or insurers.

Healthcare billing experts say tools like this may be increasingly important as patients shoulder more financial responsibility through high-deductible insurance plans.

“As out-of-pocket costs rise, consumers are being forced to act like financial auditors in a system they don’t understand,” said a healthcare policy analyst familiar with medical billing practices. “Technology that simplifies this process has the potential to reduce unnecessary payments and medical debt.”

Medical debt remains a major issue in the United States. Data from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau estimates that over 100 million Americans carry some form of medical debt, making it one of the most common sources of collections activity nationwide.

Faircare is designed for individual consumers rather than hospitals or insurance companies, a distinction its creators say is intentional.

“The healthcare system already has plenty of tools for providers and payers,” the Faircare team said. “Patients have been left out. This app is about putting information back in their hands.”

The app is currently available to U.S. consumers and operates on a subscription model, with options that allow users to scan bills before committing to ongoing service.

As scrutiny over healthcare pricing continues to grow, consumer advocates suggest solutions like Faircare may play a role in improving transparency—one bill at a time.
