-- The newest resource from Mission Connection is intended for individuals and family members impacted by oppositional defiant disorder, a behavioral condition that manifests as the inability to regulate anger and certain behaviors. In the guide, Mission Connection covers causes, symptoms, and professional treatments that are known to be effective in helping patients address and control explosive emotions; it also goes through self-help methods that can aid individuals outside of treatment.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is often regarded by mental health professionals as a childhood disorder, as symptoms are typically visible before adolescence. However, failure to address the condition can allow it to persist into teenage years and adulthood, consequently creating friction between the individual and other people in their personal and professional lives.
As outlined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), ODD has three primary symptoms: persistent angry moods or irritability that lead to frequent outbursts, constant resentment towards others, and sensitivity towards things that wouldn’t bother an individual without the condition; argumentative or defiant behavior, including purposely annoying others, arguing with people in positions of authority, refusing to follow instructions, and blaming unwanted behavior on others; and vindictiveness or spiteful impulses that are acted upon.
These symptoms must be present at least two or more times within the past six months for the individual to be clinically diagnosed, after which they may consider professional treatment options.
According to Mission Connection’s guide, ODD can be complex to treat because it often co-occurs with other mental health conditions, including ADHD, conduct disorder, anxiety, and depression. Due to these complexities, experts believe that many adult patients would benefit most from receiving support from a mental health professional that specializes in the condition, as traditional therapy may not be adequate.
Integrated approaches that combine evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) - a treatment that focuses on addressing and correcting unhealthy thinking patterns - with peer support and holistic treatments are often the most effective at managing ODD, says Mission Connection.
The guide also notes that patients can help themselves by reframing their own thoughts, eliminating stressors, strengthening social connections with friends and family, and practicing mindfulness through exercises like meditation, yoga, or tai chi, which can calm them down and lessen the intensity of their anger.
