Chairperson of Taipei 101, Yeong-Chieh Chia, to Throw Ceremonial First Pitch at This Year’s AI Taiwan Baseball Event

By: Get News

The annual “Taiwan Day” event hosted by the New York Mets, with over 20 years of history, will take place on the evening of May 24, 2025. The event will feature a game between the home team, the New York Mets, and the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. Just like last year, the event will spotlight the theme "AI Taiwan." The Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce of New York is honored to announce that Ms. Yeong-Chieh Chia, Chairperson of Taipei 101, will serve as the ceremonial first pitch guest.

The theme “AI” not only refers to Artificial Intelligence, but also echoes the Chinese word for “love”, symbolizing the deep affection and support of the Taiwanese diaspora for their homeland. It also pays tribute to the many outstanding Taiwanese talents who are making their mark in AI. This year’s event is expected to draw thousands of overseas Taiwanese and international students, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York will invite diplomatic representatives from various allied nations to join, enhancing Taiwan’s international visibility.

Ms. Chia, known for her longstanding dedication to public service and sports promotion, embodies professionalism, congeniality, and a global perspective. Together with Taipei 101, she is the best ambassador to showcase Taiwan’s innovation, vitality, and cultural confidence. Coincidentally, earlier this year, Taipei 101 hosted the “Dreams Take Flight” exhibition featuring the ball from Shohei Ohtani’s record-setting “50 Home Runs and 50 Stolen Bases” season—a ball purchased by a Taiwanese entrepreneur for NT$140 million. This exhibition serves as a significant symbol of U.S.-Taiwan sports and cultural exchange. Shohei Ohtani will also represent the Los Angeles Dodgers in a game on May 24, adding further significance and historical value to the event.

Chia shared: “I’m incredibly grateful to the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in New York for the invitation. Representing Taiwan on a Major League Baseball field in the United States is a tremendous honor. Although I just threw the first pitch in the CPBL (Chinese Professional Baseball League) a few days ago, I’ll keep practicing and do my best to share the spirit and friendship of Taiwan with American friends and overseas Taiwanese in this game.”

Ticket sales are booming—the co-hosting Taiwanese Chambers of New York and New Jersey and the Junior Chamber chapter have repeatedly released additional tickets due to high demand. As of April 9, over 1,500 tickets have already been sold.

In addition to the first pitch ceremony, Ms. Chia will attend the “Passport to Taiwan” festival on May 25, along with a series of cultural exchange events. For the latest updates, please follow our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Several Taiwanese food vendors participate in this event to bring a taste of home to attendees enjoying MLB baseball. Fans who purchase Taiwan Day package tickets can add classic Taiwanese snacks, including popcorn chicken, rice noodles, Taiwanese sausage, braised pork rice, and Taiwanese-style breads.

Sam Lin, President of the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce of New York, stated: “This event not only brings together the overseas Taiwanese community but also furthers our mission to promote U.S.-Taiwan cultural exchange. Through sports, cuisine, and technology, we hope to help mainstream American society gain a deeper appreciation for Taiwan's cultural richness.”
