On October 6th, the award ceremony for the first “Yongdian Cup” 3D Printing Creative Design Competition in the Wen San Digital Life Block, Xihu District, Hangzhou, was held at the Wen San Digital Life Block. The winning contestants came from universities such as China Jiliang University, Tianjin Polytechnic University, and Hangzhou Dianzi University.
Since the competition was launched in May this year, a total of 242 3D printing creative design works were collected nationwide. After online voting and expert group review, 8 works were shortlisted. The first prize-winning work, “Rong” (Integration), is a soap with both practicality and artistic value. Its creators, Lu Shiyuan and Wang Keke, are from the Product Design major of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University.
According to the competition rules, all contestants need to choose a direction from the three categories of “West Lake Meets Dunhuang” theme, Wen San IP digital human “Ao Yi” peripheral, and Guochao and Neo-Chinese style clothing, and complete the industrial design and product printing independently. “We chose the ‘West Lake Meets Dunhuang’ theme and wanted to use the form of layering to show the collision and fusion of the two cultures,” Wang Keke shared with everyone. The internal structure of this soap is completed by 3D printing, which is the “Three Pools Mirroring the Moon” among the ten scenic spots of the West Lake. “As the soap body is used up slowly, the dense foam washes away the rich Dunhuang tone, revealing the elegant West Lake scenery.”
“It’s beautiful and practical. This product design concept is what we advocate,” said Zhu Yuning, an expert group member and associate professor of the Department of Industrial Design, School of Design and Architecture, Zhejiang University of Technology. Cultural and creative works should not be a pure ornament, but should be integrated into life and interact with consumers. Only when they are both beautiful and practical can they get a higher score.
The score of the works consists of two parts. Based on the public online voting, the expert group members will also score the 50 preliminary shortlisted works around the five standards of innovation, technology, aesthetics, feasibility, and integrity. After the expert review, the final score of each work will be calculated according to the ratio of expert review accounting for 70% and online review accounting for 30%.
It is worth mentioning that among the 8 winning works, 5 belong to the “West Lake Meets Dunhuang” theme. “This year, Xihu District and Dunhuang have reached a strategic cooperation, and a series of cultural and creative industry supporting projects of ‘West Lake Meets Dunhuang’ are accelerating their landing,” said Zhan Fei, the person in charge of the organizer of this competition, Wen San Company of Xihu Cultural Tourism Group. The cultural and creative complex of the two sides’ cooperation will also be landed in the Wen San Digital Life Block, covering an area of about 1,300 square meters. It will rely on VR technology to create a panoramic immersive experience space, with exhibits including books, paintings, and cultural and creative peripherals.
The first “Yongdian Cup” 3D Printing Creative Design Competition not only demonstrated the infinite possibilities of 3D printing technology but also provided a platform for the public to showcase their talents and exchange learning. The holding of the competition further promoted the innovative development of the Wen San Digital Life Block, promoted the deep integration of science and technology and culture, and injected new vitality into the Hangzhou cultural and creative market. At the same time, behind this competition, Xihu District is accelerating the pace of digital transformation of the cultural and tourism industry, opening up new paths for the development of cultural tourism, and comprehensively promoting the high-quality development of culture and tourism.
