Virgin Media Accelerates Sustainability Efforts with Eco-Friendly Broadband Solutions

By: Get News

Virgin Media is pushing the boundaries of sustainability in the UK broadband market with its Green Broadband initiative. As part of its broader commitment to reducing environmental impact, Virgin Media aims to power its entire network with 100% renewable energy by 2026, a key component of its recently launched 2024 Sustainability Report. The company has set ambitious targets, including reducing its overall carbon emissions by 60% within the next three years, significantly contributing to the UK’s goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Virgin Media’s focus on sustainability extends to the products and services it offers. The company’s Gig1 Fibre broadband service, which delivers speeds of up to 1Gbps, has already reached over 16 million homes across the UK. As part of its energy-saving initiative, Virgin Media introduced new energy-efficient routers in 2023 that use 50% less power than previous models, reducing both the environmental impact and energy costs for consumers.

In addition to adopting renewable energy for its network operations, Virgin Media has launched several sustainability partnerships aimed at offsetting its carbon emissions. The company has partnered with leading environmental organisations, including the Woodland Trust, to plant over 100,000 trees across the UK as part of a reforestation effort. This initiative, which began in 2023, aims to offset more than 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Furthermore, Virgin Media is focusing on reducing electronic waste by launching a device recycling programme. By 2024, the company had collected and recycled over 500,000 old routers and set-top boxes, diverting electronic waste from landfills and contributing to a circular economy. Virgin Media customers who participate in the programme are rewarded with discounts on new devices and broadband packages, further incentivising eco-friendly behaviour.

With its comprehensive sustainability strategy and commitment to green broadband solutions, Virgin Media is setting a new standard for the telecoms industry in the UK. The company’s efforts not only benefit the environment but also provide customers with more energy-efficient and cost-effective broadband services.
