Freemasonry has been part of the civic and social fabric of the Americas since the early 1700s, taking root in the British colonies of North America before spreading through the Caribbean, Central America, and South America alongside the independence movements of the 18th and 19th centuries. For the first time, the full scope of that history across the Western Hemisphere is documented in a single, accuracy-verified reference resource.
109 JURISDICTIONS DOCUMENTED FROM PRIMARY SOURCES
The research behind the new site covers 109 recognized Masonic jurisdictions, from the oldest grand lodges in the United States to the youngest in the Caribbean and South America. Grand lodges are verified against the published recognition list of the United Grand Lodge of England, the international standard of Masonic regularity, and each jurisdiction page is built from primary sources including the grand lodges' own published histories. The breadth of that coverage reflects just how deeply Freemasonry is woven into the history of the Americas as a whole, with recognized grand lodges operating in every corner of the hemisphere.
PRINCE HALL RECOGNITION: A HALF CENTURY OF PROGRESS
Among the findings documented through the research: 44 Prince Hall Affiliated grand lodges across the United States hold independent UGLE recognition as regular Masonic bodies, and 37 of those have established formal mutual recognition with their mainstream counterpart in the same state. That progress, built through formal action on both sides, represents one of the more significant developments in American Masonic history over the past half century and continues to move forward across the country.
A REFERENCE BUILT FOR BROTHERS AND RESEARCHERS ALIKE
The full hemispheric picture is available now at American Freemasons, covering the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America in a single reference built for Brothers traveling abroad, those considering petitioning a lodge, and anyone with a serious interest in the history of the Craft across the Americas.
With more than 50 individual state pages covering every recognized mainstream and Prince Hall grand lodge in the country, the US coverage at AmericanFreemasons.org/usa-freemasonry represents the most thoroughly documented section of the site and a useful starting point for Brothers and researchers exploring the depth of the American Masonic tradition.
"Freemasonry helped shape this hemisphere. The Brothers who built these institutions across the Americas, from the founding lodges of colonial New England to the grand lodges of South America chartered in the wake of independence, deserve to have their history told accurately and completely. That is what this site is for."
- John St. Mason, Founder of American Freemasons
