The institute (ONJCRI) wants the world to imagine—and secure—a future where cancer treatments are more targeted and less harmful. Cancer patients often experience life-altering side effects as a result of cancer treatment. More precise therapies better distinguish cancer cells from healthy tissue, reducing this quality-of-life burden.

By harnessing Qumulo’s scalable data platform, cancer researchers can analyze massive volumes of genomic data with speed and precision, helping them transform raw data into more personalized treatments. Behind every data point is a cancer patient, their cancer journey and the next research breakthrough.

“At Qumulo, we believe data infrastructure should do more than move files. It should move the world forward,” said Michelle Palleschi, Chief Operating Officer at Qumulo. “We’re proud to have the institute as a customer and to be reminded that the work we do matters. When data flows without friction, researchers can focus on saving and improving lives.”

The momentum behind research at ONJCRI, based in Melbourne, Australia, has never been stronger. In the past year:

  • Institute scientists uncovered a striking link between the nervous system and gastrointestinal cancer, raising the prospect of repurposing existing migraine medications to slow tumor growth.
  • ONJCRI scientists, in partnership with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, identified that the TAK1 gene acts as a "safety switch", shielding cancer cells from immune system attacks. By switching off the gene, the breakthrough potentially opens the way for more efficient immunotherapy treatments.
  • A rare-cancer clinical trial — spanning rural and urban sites across Australia and New Zealand — demonstrated that a novel immunotherapy combination induced remission in patients with advanced disease who previously had almost no treatment options.

Researchers also engineered next generation nanoparticles that deliver cancer therapies with far greater precision. And the institute's CRISPR platform, MAGEC, has produced over 400 animal models of disease, distributed to hundreds of laboratories worldwide, and has fueled more than 100 published studies.

Data Powers Discovery

Science at this scale generates an extraordinary volume of data — genomic sequences, high-resolution tumor images, clinical trial records, and real-time imaging from scanners. Qumulo provides the unstructured data infrastructure that keeps this information flowing seamlessly across ONJCRI's advanced research platforms. When researchers need answers fast, whether tracking cancer cells with genetic barcodes or modeling nanoparticle delivery in live animals, reliable, scalable data management is the foundation on which everything is built.

Throughout May, ONJCRI invites individuals, businesses, and organizations to imagine a better future for cancer treatment and to act. Donations made during the Imagine Appeal directly support the institute's research programs, discovering more precise and gentler cancer therapies. Qumulo encourages its own community — customers, partners, and employees — to consider supporting this remarkable work.
