FoodReady’s industry research reveals audit preparation, traceability documentation, and digital adoption gaps across food manufacturing operations.

FoodReady, a leading provider of AI-powered food safety, traceability, and quality management software, has conducted a survey of hundreds of mid-sized food manufacturers in North America as part of its continuous improvement efforts. The results are clear: Most companies are not as audit-ready as they think they are.

The research found that many small to mid-sized food manufacturers cannot demonstrate audit readiness when it matters most, citing fragmented documentation, missing records, outdated traceability practices, and unautomated systems as the top culprits. Nearly half of respondents still manage critical quality records in spreadsheets or paper-based logs, with only a small fraction having digitized their corrective action and supplier verification workflows.

Respondents reported that documentation access, traceability records, and manual quality workflows remain common barriers to demonstrating audit readiness.

Other key findings from the research include inconsistent internal audit scheduling, limited visibility into traceability beyond one or two supply chain tiers, and low adoption of digital features for HACCP plan management and supplier approval. The research done also highlights the growing gap between regulatory expectations under FSMA 204 and the reality inside many facilities.

“Audit readiness isn’t a once-a-year event. It has to be built into daily verifies operations and company culture,” said Dave Seddon, co-founder and Chief Safety Officer at FoodReady. “Our research confirms what we hear from customers all the time: the biggest risk isn’t intentional non-compliance for record or document retrieval; it’s the slow process of manual document and record management that only becomes visible when an auditor asks for support.”

FoodReady’s all-in-one platform is designed to close those gaps by centralizing HACCP documentation, supplier records, corrective actions, internal audits, and traceability data into one connected system. FoodReady customers report faster audit preparation times and increasingly better performance across SQF, BRCGS, and FSSC 22000 audits.
