MTFComm today announced the successful demonstration of a novel wireless modem delivering 1.78 Gbps within a standard 8 MHz channel, using a constant-envelope OFDM waveform.

This result represents a substantial increase in spectral efficiency compared to conventional OFDM-based systems, while simultaneously improving power efficiency by up to four times.

OFDM is the foundation of nearly every modern high-speed wireless system in use today, from 4G and 5G cellular to Wi-Fi and satellite communications. Its widespread adoption, however, has long been constrained by a fundamental limitation that forces radios to trade power efficiency for performance, a constraint that is particularly costly for battery-operated and satellite-based systems.

MTFComm’s constant-envelope waveform addresses this limitation by preserving the throughput and spectral advantages of OFDM while significantly improving power efficiency. Because the waveform remains compatible with existing cellular and Wi-Fi standards, it can be deployed within today’s infrastructure without requiring changes to spectral footprint.

The system was validated in real hardware under controlled test conditions. Its constant-envelope design enables the use of highly efficient power amplifiers, making it particularly well suited for satellite communications, where power efficiency is a critical constraint, as well as battery-constrained devices and long-range wireless applications.

“This milestone demonstrates that the practical limits of conventional OFDM systems can be substantially extended,” said Michel Fattouche, Founder of MTFComm and Emeritus Professor at the University of Calgary. “Our work shows that significantly higher data rates and energy efficiency can be achieved within existing spectrum allocations, without requiring changes to spectral footprint.”

The system builds on foundational work in WirelessOFDM co-authored by Dr. Fattouche, whose contributions underpin technologies deployed in billions of cellular and Wi-Fi devices worldwide, and is protected by a growing international patent portfolio.

Detailed technical results and system architecture are available to qualified partners upon request. MTFComm is currently engaging with partners across telecommunications, satellite, and semiconductor industries to advance field trials and commercialization.
