Houston, Texas-based Halliburton Company (HAL) is a leading global provider of products and services to the energy industry, specializing in the exploration, development, and production of oil and natural gas. Valued at a market cap of $33.8 billion, the company’s portfolio features advanced drilling fluids, wireline and perforating services, artificial lift systems, and specialized drill bits designed to optimize reservoir performance and increase extraction efficiency.
This energy company has notably outperformed the broader market over the past 52 weeks. Shares of HAL have rallied 107.8% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has gained 28.5%. Moreover, on a YTD basis, the stock is up 43%, compared to SPX’s 7.6% rise.
Looking closer, HAL has also outpaced the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE), which surged 41.6% over the past 52 weeks and 27.5% on a YTD basis.
Recently, on May 6, shares of HAL declined 3.2% after crude oil prices dropped sharply, following President Trump’s decision to pause military escorts through the Strait of Hormuz and comments pointing to progress in a potential U.S.–Iran peace agreement.
Earlier, on Apr. 21, the stock had climbed 4% after the company posted stronger-than-expected Q1 results. Performance was supported by solid international activity and early signs of a recovery in the North American market. While revenue remained flat year-over-year at $5.4 billion, earnings per share came in at $0.55, ahead of analyst expectations of $0.49.
For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect HAL’s EPS to decline 4.1% year over year to $2.32. The company’s earnings surprise history is promising. It met or topped the consensus estimates in each of the last four quarters.
Among the 25 analysts covering the stock, the consensus rating is a "Moderate Buy,” which is based on 14 “Strong Buy,” three “Moderate Buy,” seven "Hold,” and one “Strong Sell” rating.
The configuration is more bullish than a month ago, with 13 analysts suggesting a "Strong Buy” rating.
On Apr. 22, Bill Selesky from Argus Research maintained a “Buy” rating on HAL, with a price target of $45, indicating an 11.4% potential upside from the current levels.
The mean price target of $42.71 suggests a 5.7% premium to its current levels, while its Street-high price target of $49 implies a 21.3% potential upside from the current price levels.
