Independent US Contractors Cut Equipment Costs Up to 60% With Pre-Owned Fleets

New heavy equipment prices have climbed 20% to 25% since late 2024, driven by Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum that added an estimated $2.6 billion in incremental manufacturing costs. Earthmoving MSU Equipment, an online retailer of 100 to 140 curated pre-owned machines, reports that independent contractors and small construction firms are increasingly shifting to pre-owned fleets to avoid high dealership financing and steep first-year depreciation on new units.

THE NEW-EQUIPMENT DEBT TRAP

A mid-sized US landscaping or excavation company looking at a new 20-to-30-ton excavator faces a sticker price between $200,000 and $600,000 in 2026. Standard dealer bank loan rates run 7.5% to 10.5% for well-qualified borrowers. Subprime borrowers -- which includes many smaller operators -- face rates of 18% or higher.

Then comes depreciation. New heavy machinery loses up to 40% of its value in the first 12 months. A contractor who finances a $300,000 machine at 9% over 60 months will owe more than the machine is worth within a year.

The US used equipment market tells a different story. Valued at approximately $28.5 billion in 2025 and projected to reach $30.2 billion in 2026, it's growing specifically because buyers are doing this math.

THE PRE-OWNED ADVANTAGE, BY THE NUMBERS

Industry data for 2025-2026 shows consistent savings across every major equipment category:

- Excavators (20-30 ton): New $200K-$600K vs. used $75K-$220K -- up to 60% savings

- Wheel loaders: New $150K-$450K vs. used $50K-$150K -- up to 65% savings

- Bulldozers: New $180K-$340K vs. used $80K-$180K -- up to 50% savings

- Skid steers: New $50K-$110K vs. used $25K-$55K -- up to 50% savings

Industry analysts identify the "sweet spot" as machines 3 to 5 years old. These units have absorbed the first-year depreciation cliff but still carry modern Tier 4 or early Tier 5 engines and thousands of hours of useful life.

"A family-owned paving company in Indiana doesn't need the newest CAT off the factory floor to bid on a county road job. They need a reliable machine that doesn't saddle them with a six-figure loan at 10% interest," said Kevin Evans, Public Relations Chief at Earthmoving MSU Equipment. "That's exactly what we stock. Every machine in our fleet is hand-picked for operators who care about getting work done, not about having the newest paint job."
