Shad Finney, founder of the nonprofit organization Neighbors in Humanity and author of Just One Planet, has announced the annual observance of National Just One Human Family Day, taking place on September 12th, 2024. This special day is dedicated to fostering unity, understanding, and harmony among all people as part of one global human family.
“National Just One Human Family Day is a chance for everyone to pause and reflect on the fact that we are all interconnected as brothers, sisters, neighbors, and friends,” commented Finney. “It is a day meant to inspire a sense of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence on this planet we all share.”
The Origins of Just One Human Family Day
Finney’s vision for this day of unity stems from a moving experience he had witnessing a performance of the song Just One Planet by a choir of 300 students. The song, written by Bloomington, Indiana teachers Catherine Marchese and Sarah Stevens, left a lasting impact on Shad.
“Watching those students sing about a world united as one planted a seed in my mind about the importance of fostering peace and togetherness,” Finney recalled. “I wanted to create a space where people from all walks of life could come together to honor that idea and make it a reality.”
To bring this vision to life, Shad established National Just One Human Family Day, designating September 12th as the day for its annual commemoration. Through this observance, Finney hopes to inspire people worldwide to work towards a more peaceful and harmonious existence, not just for today, but for generations to come.
Neighbors in Humanity: Extending the Message of Unity
In conjunction with National Just One Human Family Day, Finney founded the nonprofit organization Neighbors in Humanity, which works to support vulnerable populations across the globe. Proceeds from his book, Just One Planet, along with other fundraising efforts, are directed toward humanitarian projects that embody the values of unity and cooperation.
“We all share this one planet, and it’s our responsibility to care for one another, especially the most vulnerable among us,” Finney remarked. “The work of Neighbors in Humanity is an extension of the ideals behind Just One Human Family Day, promoting real action towards creating a world where compassion and support are the foundation of human relationships.”

This year, as in years past, Finney invites communities, schools, organizations, and individuals from all over the world to come together on September 12th in celebration of National Just One Human Family Day.
“Let’s take this opportunity to remind ourselves that despite our differences, we are all part of the same global family,” Finney emphasized. “Whether it’s through joining hands, singing songs like Just One Planet, or finding other meaningful ways to connect with those around us, we can make this day a moment of unity and reflection.”
Finney hopes that the day’s activities will encourage participants to continue the work of building bridges between different cultures, faiths, and backgrounds long after September 12th has passed.
